Sign Up. Rough It. Help end homelessness.
Challenge yourself to experience a small glimpse of the difficulties of homelessness for a great cause!
Live with no bed, one bag and less than $10 a day.
Taking part in The Roughin It Challenge at home might seem easy, but trust us, you will be tested! You will gain a new appreciation for the everyday comforts you take for granted and just how much you rely on them.
When taking on the Challenge, for safety and legal reasons, you must be within the grounds of a property you have permission to use – so usually at a property you own or rent.
The most important thing to know is that The Roughin’ It Challenge cannot be done in a public space. Doing so can be dangerous and potentially illegal, so please keep clear of these spaces.
Once you’ve signed up, let your family, friends and colleagues know about your challenge and ask them to sponsor you.
Remember to keep them informed about your challenge with tales of your experience, some choice pics or video – it will help them see what they’re supporting and will likely trigger some interesting conversations!
Find a spot to sleep that isn't a bed
Pick a sleep spot (other than a bed) on property you own or rent. Choose wisely – you’ll be here for a while!
Consider shelter, warmth, comfort and safety in your selection. It could be on the floor, in your front or back yard, in your car or another space within the bounds of your property.
Work out how you will spend $10 a day to fuel?
$10 doesn’t go far! Careful planning is essential to stay healthy and to ward off those hunger pains. The $10 allowance covers all your expenses, so includes food, drink (yes, including coffee), even travel costs.
Keep an eye on Roughin’ It Challenge email and social media for hints and tips on how to survive.
Pack the essentials you will need to survive in one bag
It's harder than you think – all clothes, bedding, equipment and treasured items must fit in one bag you can carry, like a standard backpack.
If you can’t carry it with you at all times or have it within sight (yes, including going to the toilet), then you cannot use it. Some tough choices will be made!
